Proudly presented by the Globe Theatre, Wellington’s luminaries of ethereal dream-pop/folk French for Rabbits will be bringing their stunning new EP ‘In the End I Won’t Be Coming Home’ to life with a string quartet in a special performance in Palmerston North. Following two successful shows (including a sold out show in Whanganui's St Peter's Church), the band are excited to announce this new show for Palmerston North.

The EP was recorded in July of 2023 and in early 2024 the EP came out as a vinyl release which also includes the band's much loved 2012 debut EP Claimed by the Sea on the b-side.

Their music, which has been nominated for the Taite Music Prize, NZ Music Awards and APRA Silver Scrolls has seen the understated group perform internationally through the USA and Europe, open for the likes of Lorde, Marlon Williams, Agnes Obel, The Tallest Man on Earth and Blanco White.

For the tour, they are traveling as an extended 9-piece including a string quartet led by award winning composer, arranger and performer Elliot Vaughan (Canada/New Zealand). The group will join the band to reinterpret material from previous releases alongside those from the EP - adding detail and colour to the already cinematic soundscapes and intimate folk songs of songwriter/vocalist Brooke Singer.

Elliot has contributed arrangements for over 30 records with Canadian and New Zealand artists, and countless performances around the world, and holds a Master’s of Musical Arts from the New Zealand School of Music and a Bachelor’s of Fine Art from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver.

Niko Ne Zna are excited to announce their return to The Globe Theatre Palmerston North for a special performance, bringing their music back to this treasured Manawatu venue. Niko Ne Zna is a world class world music extravaganza. A staple of the New Zealand festival circuit and frequently selling out shows at home and more recently in Australia. A hot and spicy taste of the old countries right here in the capital of New Zealand. Playing captivating original music as well as classic songs from the Romani-soaked Balkan States, Niko Ne Zna’s hypnotic melodies and wild infectious rhythms will set even the most rhythmically challenged moving and grooving!

Combining driving rhythms, melodic brass and beautifully alluring vocals, Niko Ne Zna creates unforgettable moments for their audiences. The 9-piece band have firmly cemented themselves as one of New Zealand's premiere and sought after world music groups, complete with wonderfully hypnotic melodies and cerebral rhythms that draw from the Balkan region.

Based in New Zealand’s creative and cultural capital of Wellington, all nine members are formidable instrumentalists and composers in their own right. Their current lineup consists of two trumpets, soprano saxophone, bass and tenor trombones, sousaphone, balkan bass drum (tapan) and snare drum, an exotic cocktail of instrumentation and musicianship that creates an atmosphere and vibe like no other. To top it off, their vocalist/percussionist Nikkie Rich sings in multiple languages, including Serbo-Croatian, Romani, Macedonian, Greek and English.

The concert is General Admission and we are removing the front two rows of seats to create a dance floor so you can come on down and get with the rhythm.

“It’s easy to forget where you are when you listen to these hypnotic melodies. It’s like being dropped amongst the hot and spicy lands of a country far away - to a place where you can free yourself with these infectious and wild beats that take their influence from the gypsy-soaked Balkan States.”
— wellingtonlivemusic.com

“The group's jaunty carnival-style sound translates surprisingly well to disc, with trombone, sousaphone, sax and trumpet all vying for attention as the songs spiral riotously outward from a core riff before being reined back in again.”
— Otago Daily Times

“Gypsy good times…”
— Rip It Up Magazine

“… this is straight to the dancefloor”
— Elsewhere

“Driving rhythms an intoxicating effect”

On Sunday May 5th, Wellington based songwriter Jenny Mitchell is set to play her Palmerston North debut at Globe Theatre. Jenny is a dynamic storyteller who is rapidly capturing fans across the motu and the globe. Her music is full of warmth, truth and family harmonies - think the best of The Chicks + Norah Jones.

This show is part of a string of North Island gigs in Wellington, Auckland and Whangārei before Jenny heads to Paihia to headline the Bay of Islands Country Rock Festival. Audiences will be wrapped in the energy of Jenny, Aaron Stewart (bass), Michael Muggeridge (mandolin), little sister Nicola Mitchell (guitar and vocals) and special guest Maddison Connor; a 16 year old Nelson based musician who will be opening the show.

Originally from Gore, the award-winning storyteller is now based in Wellington and is excited to share new work on this tour. Since releasing her most recent album, Tug of War (2022), Jenny has played sold out shows around the country, shared festival stages with Dave Dobbyn and was the only New Zealander selected to play at global music conference Folk Alliance International in 2023 (Kansas City, U.S). Tug of War was nominated for an Aotearoa Music Award, Australian Golden Guitar Award and includes the 2023 APRA Best Country Song; Trouble Finds a Girl.

“Femme Fiction” is a grass-roots, homegrown theatrical experience that delves into the essence of femininity. This originally devised and written work, which underwent a development season with the support of the Palmerston North City Council (PNCC) in 2023, is now ready to captivate audiences with a fully staged show, thanks to the backing of PNCC once more with Creative Communities funding.

The show poses the thought-provoking question, “What is Femininity?” and answers it through a tapestry of real stories and experiences drawn from a diverse cross-section of our community. Audiences will be treated to a rich mosaic of monologues, scenes, and bite-sized moments that promise laughter, enjoyment, and a deep connection.

Brought to you by the same company that presented the sold-out season of “The V Monologues” and recently oversaw the successful 2024 season of Manawatu summer Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing,” “Femme Fiction” is a testament to the company’s commitment to powerful storytelling.

At the helm is the award-winning director Rhian Firmin, whose previous works include “V Monologues,” “Romeo & Juliet,” and “Much Ado About Nothing.” Under Firmin’s intuitive leadership, the ensemble invites you to a celebration of femininity that is inclusive and affirming for all.
“Femme Fiction” is more than just a show; it’s a movement. It encourages us to sink our teeth into the narrative, ground our feet in the stories, open our arms, and wholeheartedly embrace the multifaceted nature and energy of femininity. Join us for a striking journey that affirms femininity is for EVERYONE.

“Please Adjust your G-string” is a hilarious romp through an OE with a difference. Margaret Austin left New Zealand in 1975 with no idea what lay ahead on the other side of the world. Blessed – or cursed – with a sense of adventure she turned up her nose at London, and went for Amsterdam, Athens and Paris, diving into experiences and situations not for the faint hearted. Some of them involved G strings, one or two were downright dangerous, and all of them added up to a life of unique discovery.

The young virtuoso recently described as “the finest guitar player of this generation” has fallen in love with New Zealand and after sellout tours through North America and Europe he will be back for an extensive national run of 35 shows!

Growing up in the Bega Valley on the Far South Coast of New South Wales, Australia the story goes that the young singer-songwriter and one of a kind guitar virtuoso first picked up his instrument of choice as a 5-year-old following in the footsteps of a musical father. He be-gan writing songs at 12, training classically throughout his teens and performing wherever he could, honing his craft and developing the dynamite live show that he is renowned for today. At 18 he finished school, turned professional and hit the road without looking back.

The following 15 years have seen him independently release 7 studio albums, tour relent-lessly around the globe, play some of the biggest festivals under the sun and share stages with the likes of Tommy Emmanuel, INXS, John Butler, Lucinda Williams, Ani DiFranco, Judy Collins and Rodrigo y Gabriela.

He has been described as “the finest guitar player of this generation”, “a leading light in acoustic music” and “a performer that must be seen to be believed” and in July and August he will bring his never ending world tour back to New Zealand!

WHAT THE PRESS SAY..
“The word Prodigy seems to entirely fall short of this soft-spoken young man’s skills, he co-axes sounds and melodies out of his instrument that literally drop jaws.” The Calgary Herald, CANADA

“Today I saw the future of Folk – Festival goers flocking in the thousands towards the main stage to witness a young musical phenomenon from Australia dish out an absolute show-stop-per.” The Firefly Column, USA

“Daniel Champagne is a crossroads. Fusing the strong traditions of Blues, Folk and other roots art with pop showmanship and admirable lyrical ability. I firmly believe that he will be-come an ambassador for roots music in a time where it desperately needs representation.” The Indie Blender, CANADA

“reinventing roots guitar” Rhythms Magazine, AUSTRALIA

“Watching Daniel Champagne perform is a once in a lifetime experience. He is a true prodigy that plays like no one else could possibly play unless they spent at least two lifetimes study-ing the art.” BW Review, NEW ZEALAND

“Daniel Champagne exudes a natural ease on stage, as he sings poignant lyrics and beauti-fully crafted melodies that invariably whisk the heart up with grand romanticism. Coupled with an exhilarating guitar talent that transcends mere acoustic playing to replicate a whole band, Champagne is just magical” Themusic.com.au, AUSTRALIA

"You feel as if he just invented the instrument yesterday and was discovering its possibilities afresh” Ted Gioia (American jazz critic and music historian)
